Door Hardware at Vikingsholm

This summer for our family vacation we went to beautiful Lake Tahoe and had a great time with the kids. On one day we went over to tour a cool old castle called Vikingsholm at Emerald Bay which is on the southwest shore of the lake. This place was fun to visit and had some interesting history, and of course I checked out the architecture and cool door hardware there.myphome 1020

Vikingsholm was a summer home built in 1929 by Lora Josephine Knight. She bought a big chunk of land at Emerald bay, including Fannette Island, for $250,000. That’s around 3.5 million in today’s money. The home was built out of materials found locally at Lake Tahoe. Granite stones for the foundation and outer walls were quarried on site, and the timber for the structure was cut from that area too. The foundation was laid in 1928 and the rest of the building was completed the following summer. She had hired 200 craftsmen who lived in temporary barracks while they built the home. Vikingsholm was crafted to replicate scandanavian buildings from the 11th century. myphome 1021The workmanship on this place was amazing. Some of the more memorable features are the wood carvings on the structure of the home, paintings on the ceilings and walls and the hand crafted furniture. Some parts of the heavy timber construction were done with tightly fitting joinery with no nails or pegs consistent with the methods used in 11th century Sweden.

Guest bedroom door locks

Check out the door hardware from the main entrance. The handle on the top left draws the latch. The little face on the top of the lock is attached to a pin that drops down in the lock, I couldn’t tell what the function of that was. Keyhole at the bottom to lock or unlock.  All of the guest bedrooms had these sweet looking locks imported from Sweden according to our tour guide. The locksets have a latch that can be opened from the inside, but can only be locked from the outside. Apparently the idea on security at the time was that the hostess would lock all of the guests into their rooms at night and then she would lock herself into her own room. Doesnt seem too safe by today’s standards, but I guess there were less problems if everyone was locked into their room for the night.

All of the doors had the cool old strap hinges on them.myphome 1035 These hinges, along with the fireplace screens and metal light fixtures were forged by hand on site.  Vikingsholm was an amazing place. Much to be admired there as it was built in the early 1900’s by skilled craftsmen. The detail on this place was unbelievable. Today Vikingsholm is owned by the State of California, its been very well preserved and is a fun place to visit. Also plan on a short hike to Eagle Falls and playing at the sandy beach, or rent a kayak right there at Emerald Bay.

Replacing Skeleton Key Type Locks?

If you are searching for replacements for your old skeleton key type locks, you are in luck! Nostalgic Warehouse makes brand new hardware to replace that style of lock. Be careful, because if you aren’t sure what a skeleton key lock is you may likely be ordering the wrong style to fit your door. Skeleton door knobs are a whole lot different from door knobs you see today. It requires special door preparation to fit what’s called the Mortise Box for the door knobs to attach to. The reason we call them skeleton key type locks is because they use that old fashioned skeleton keys you see on older homes. The vintage or antique style hardware. Here’s the difference from a skeleton key mortise box compared to a regular or standard door preparation (like today’s doors).

The picture on the left is the Nostalgic Warehouse mortise lock box and the picture on the right is the standard door preparation for doors today. The problem you will have if you order the mortise box (or skeleton key type mortise lock) will be that you can not install that big box in the bore holes. It just wont work. So it’s important to understand what you are ordering. If your door does in fact use skeleton keys than you should be able to replace them with Nostalgic Warehouse door knobs. Nostalgic Warehouse offers a wide selection of door knob styles like porcelain door knobs, crystal door knobs or the fancy decorative brass door knobs. Maybe you have a great working mortise box and all you need to do is replace are the door knobs only or just the backplates only… you can totally do that! Or you can totally replace the mortise box and the knob all together (as a set).

If you are looking for door knobs that look like antique but will fit your regular or standard prep doors, check out Nostalgic Warehouse’s door knobs.

Modern Vintage Style

I think we have all walked or maybe even driven down a street somewhere with a bunch of fixed up vintage houses. I have before and I always thought how fun it would be to take a tour of the entire house, to see what each room would look like. The outside of the houses are painted with care, the inside of them have got to be fixed up too. I wonder what kind of furniture they must have, what kind of curtains, light fixtures, paint colors and door hardware. I usually imagine crystal door knobs and crystal chandeliers throughout the entire house.

Vintage style really is one of my favorites. There are several kinds of vintage if you really want to get into it, such as the more Victorian vintage with fancy plated hardware and crystal door knobs and chandeliers, and then I can also think of the antique vintage style with great Grandma’s trunk and old wooden crates and porcelain door knobs.

If you are going for that antique or vintage look, you should check out the crystal door knobs grouped from 3 different brands (Emtek, Grandeur and Nostalgic Warehouse) we carry on the site. You should also check out more vintage styles from Nostalgic Warehouse and here are some more styles from Grandeur. All of these vintage/antique style door knobs are for modern style doors, but give the effect of being vintage. They work just like a regular door knob would and some may even have a decorative key hole in the plate (like the one in the above picture) for an even more vintage feel. There are so many styles to choose from! Let me show you a few styles I like from Emtek Grandeur and Nostalgic Warehouse,

Parth_Hyde_500From Grandeur – The Parthenon Plate with Hyde Park Knob

CP_brass_ASE_Oval_US15From Emtek – The Astoria Emerald Door knob with Oval Rosette in Satin Nickel

500_clahomapFrom Nostalgic Warehouse – Classic Rosette with Homestead Knob in Antique Pewter

What’s great about these is that you can order the same door knob with different finishes and different rosettes (backplates). The options are endless!

Replacing a Vintage Door Knob Only

Vintage (or antique) door knobs go way way back. We can all picture a style in our heads of what one might look like or maybe one we have seen in the past. These are the kind of door knobs I have always loved, even before I was a part of Direct Door Hardware. I just now thought of a time when I was young and my parents wanted to buy a new home and I would ask them what the door knobs looked like in each house they went to tour. I remember them thinking it was so funny that I really wanted to know what the door knobs looked like. And now, I work for a place where door hardware is ordered and shipped on a daily bases. A little ironic.

If someone were to mention vintage door knob, the first style that pops into my head are the porcelain door knobs (my favorite), then I think of the crystal door knobs. There are other styles too like brass that have fancy designs engraved on them, or just simple style ones with a big rectangular backplate. The list goes on and on.

Maybe you have an older home with some of these old antique or vintage style door knobs that need replacing, not the mechanism, just the door knob. You can do just that. Nostalgic Warehouse offers door knobs only with a spindle of your choice (standard, mortise, privacy, or dummy), making it easy to replace your old door knobs without having to buy all new mechanism and going through the hassle of  installing it all.

NOTE: It’s important to know that we do not guarantee that these will fit all the brands out there and some brands may have their own design, so please make sure to take measurements of your existing antique or vintage hardware to be certain you order the correct size of spindle. Nostalgic Warehouse hardware has a 20% restock fee.

You can see all the Nostalgic Warehouse door knob and spindle only options here.

If you need to replace your entire vintage mechanism and door knob and your door knob uses skeleton keys, you can find all the hardware here.
